FOSTER RATING discussion by Tim McMurray on the yellow forum.
I've seen some misrepresentations recently of the actual PSI Factory ratings for Foster 12FS Plated Brass Female Quick Connects.
The rating they give is 2500 PSI for the 12FS when used in conjunction with a BRASS male nipple made to proper specs. Other brass nipples who knows.
A less conservative rating is given for Hansen Brass couplers at 3K but it would seem the rating for the male nipple would still be the weak link. A 12FS Foster with a Steel fill nipple is rated higher at 2600 so the weakness is obviously related to the male Brass QC.
I can tell you from experience steel male QC's are the only way to go. Hard Chrome balls digging into a brass groove just isn't a bright idea although it seems the go to solution for the profit minded.
The rating for the 12FSS (Stainless Steel)is 4200 PSI so in reality when these QC's are being used to fill a tank thru they are having their MWP rating exceeded by roughly 10%. Fosters conservative ratings have a lot to do with the companies obvious philosophy of not putting the consumer at risk. Not a bad strategy. Overbuild and underpromise.
Filling a Marauder with a Brass plated 12FS is OK for the guns taking 2500-2600 psi but in the case of filling a .25 cal that takes 3K or filling the 3K tank through the yoke the QC is being used above it's nominal rating.
I've seen lots of QC's that I did not trust at all. That is why I use Fosters. When the patent ran out the Foster standard was adopted by the QC industry as an industrial standard. So any maker can make a Foster type QC.
Chinese makers dominate the world of painball which supplies a good number of the products here for use by Airgunners.
I find the domestic makers products to be a superior product that we should support if only because it is USA made. The Male Steel fitting Dennis makes is a perfect example of USA makers doing a really competitive product we should support. Whether you consider the 2500 or 3K rating for the brass couplers be sure to not use them on High Pressure systems and trust them to fill through if you are going to 4500 psi. That is the domain of the Stainless steel connectors with steel nipples.
Be conservative. always opt for the safest practice and products to make sure you are not pushing the envelope. Filling a gun to 10% over it's rating and letting it cool to the needed pressure isn't going to cause global annihilation but people who disrespect ratings and push till they reach the breaking point are doing Darwins work.
You can go into Home Desperate and pick up fittings with 27 tpi that are not rated at all. They fit. OMG! DON"T PUT HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMS TOGETHER WITH UNRATED or underated FITTINGS! Lowe's and Home Depot need not apply.
I don't want to get into a rating debate but I don't appreciate it when folks misrepresent the numnbers for the sake of generating doubt about the integrity of a competitors offerings.
Keep it honest.
