This a previous post I made in another forum a year ago, re-posting it here too for backup.
Hi guys,
Just wanna share my experience last Sunday, I got invited by a friend (who is also one of the pioneer airsofter here in Davao), who also has this hobby - long range rifle target shooting. And guess what, I got to shoot his Remington M24 bolt-action sniper rifle equipped with a Carl Ziess scope. It was a blast! (the experience and the gun's firepower). Arrived in the range at a little after 7am. My friend and his shooting buddies are already having coffee, after some introduction. Guns were taken out from their gun bags, you couldn't imagine how I felt (in the back of my mind I was drooling!), I had to compose myself, there was a kitty kat version of the all familiar Armalite rifle, an urban sniper rifle using an M16 base with 16" Walther Flutted Barrel that shoots .223 rounds and has a PSG-style butt, then there's an MSSR sniper rifle.
After a few orientation and familiarization on the M24 and dry firing to test the trigger. Bullets are loaded (it uses a .308!) Composing myself for the shot (the rifle has a bipod and on a shooting table for convenience). The recoil was awesome! I First tried shooting at a 6" metal plate at the 100mtr. range. missed! Though I missed, I was having an adrenalin rush, the guys told me to relax and not anticipate the shot. The following shots I faired better, taking out the 6" and 4" plate. I was able to fire 6 rounds (mind you the bullets are expensive since these are match grade).
Then they showed me the urban sniper rifle, a very beautiful piece, they told me it fires .223 rounds and mechanism is just like an M16, only has two settings-safe and semi auto. It has a two-stage trigger which I really liked. After familiarizing with the trigger pull and adjusting the butt and cheek piece for comfort. Loaded the mag with 5 rounds. Time to shoot. Tried the 100mtr targets. Wow!. This gun is better to shoot, lesser recoil! Missed some shots but this I got to fire about a dozen rounds and match grade bullets were used.
After using up all the rounds, got to evaulate my shooting. Then the owner of the MSSR who was actually in the range to zero the new scope he installed on the rifle, told me, "here try this". Now that's what I call a bonus! Gave me a mag with several rounds left from the zeroing. Since all the plates in the 100mtr. range were used up I had no choice but to shoot the 6" plates in the 200-meter lane.
First shot, I hit the plate, subsequent shots however I missed the other plate. Then the owner went up and told me that I have to hit that target or I'm not leaving the shooting table. Then, handed me about 4 rounds and said "here use this match grade rounds, since 60% of your shot accuracy is actually contributed by your bullets" True to his word after loading the mag and chambering one round. Bang! I hit the 6" plate!
It was really a great Sunday morning, And I have the guys to thank. Can't tell you their names though for security reasons. hehehe.
Here's a pic of the M24 that I got to shoot, note that it has a custom bolt handle - left hand side (that whole setup is about P700K):
